An incremental encoder reacts to a linear or rotary motion by producing a sequence of pulses. These pulses can be supplied to a counter or PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) to track a relative position, or they can be used to measure speed. Typically, an electrical square wave signal with a specific frequency connected to the encoder shaft’s speed is the output signal of an incremental encoder.

The position value produced by absolute rotary single-turn and multi-turn encoders represents the encoder shaft’s real location. The encoder can maintain positional tracking even if the shaft is turned when the application loses power. Absolute encoders are available with enhanced fieldbus interfaces and serial point-to-point interfaces.
